Why Your Military Tax Return Deserves Better Than TurboTax

February 7, 2025 by Andrew Samaniego Leave a Comment

A call yesterday reminded me why I’m passionate about my career as an Enrolled Agent.

A Navy service member reached out (fellow USNA Grad), overwhelmed with his new rental property and his wife’s 1099 income.

Like many, he started with TurboTax, but quickly realized he was in over his head.

Here’s what most tax software companies don’t advertise: they’re not built for military returns. Think about it — when was the last time TurboTax asked about:
 • BAH implications
 • PCS move deductions
 • Multiple state residency rules
 • Combat zone exclusions
 • Special rental property considerations for deployed service members

The Calculator vs. The Professional

Using tax software is like having a calculator for your math test. Sure, it can crunch numbers, but:
 • It won’t tell you which numbers to input
 • It can’t spot missed deductions
 • It doesn’t understand military-specific rules
 • It won’t defend you during an audit

Think of it this way: The IRS is the teacher grading your homework. When they find mistakes, they’re coming after you, not the calculator you used.

Real Money Left on the Table

During my call yesterday, I pointed out several deductions this Navy member was missing:
 • Home Office Deduction
 • Home of Residence rules for military(recently updated for the better)
 • Certain Utilities and Phone Bills

His response? “How do I sign up?”

Who Needs Professional Tax Preparation?

You might need a pro if you:
✓ Are active duty or retired military
 ✓ Own rental property
 ✓ Have 1099 income
 ✓ Run a small business
 ✓ Want peace of mind

The Real Cost of DIY

The money you “save” using tax software often costs you more in:
 • Missed deductions
 • Incorrect calculations
 • Audit exposure
 • Time and stress
